We did diaposable in the first four months with James. Eventually we can't stand the diaper pile we throw away; it is so many! I can imagine putting piles of diapers to this dear Earth anymore. We even do biodegradable diapers, but I still don't think its the solution. With the encouragement from my own mother, we brave up!
The first thing to get is a washing machine. If you have a washing machine, half of your battle have won already. We tried to hand wash for a month, it wasn't that bad but our life was so much better once we installed the washing machine. It was expensive, but we are also saving trips to the coined machines, no need to go to the bank for quarters, and $2 per small load is starting to hurt our family with chilren anyways. It's a good investment for us in the long run.
The second thing is to get the correct cloth diapers. I have read so many reviews about bumGenius and i decided to give it a try. The hook and loop is super, and my son never has diaper rash! Even the poo poo is easy to wash out of it, it is still white! NEVER had a problem. Only thing is to put it on correctly then it doesn't leak.
We own 15 cloth diapers and they are last us about 2 days. We wash them with James' and our clothes. Hang drying our clothes also saves more energy. In the winter, they dry by the insane heat in the apartment and the summer we have the sun. So It isn't hard! You can do it.
We also used Charlie Banana Diapers. It is cheaper, but the fabric did not stay dry as bungenius did, and the buttons doesn't give the perfect fit as hoop and loop can. But we still keep them around cause they can be use for short period of time.
